During the installation or launch of Safe Exam Browser (SEB) on Mac computers, an error message may appear, the screen may flicker, or the system may freeze.

This is a common issue caused by missing permissions that macOS requires to be approved manually.

Please follow the instructions below exactly in the given order:

Step 1 – Close SEB
Close SEB completely.
If necessary – restart the computer.

Step 2 – Approve System Extension
Click the Apple menu
Go to System Settings
Select Privacy & Security

Step 3 – Grant Additional Permissions (Required)
In the same Privacy & Security screen, make sure SEB has permission for:

  • Screen Recording

  • Accessibility

  • Input Monitoring

  • Full Disk Access

Step 4 – Restart
After granting all permissions – perform a full restart of the computer.

Step 5 – Reopen SEB
Only after the restart, open Safe Exam Browser again.

Important Notes

  • The issue is especially common on Mac computers with M1 / M2 / M3 processors

  • This is not a hardware malfunction

  • Make sure SEB was installed only from the official website
